Chicken Wings & Little Rock Half Marathon Recap

Before I talk about the Little Rock Half Marathon from last weekend, let’s talk about this most recent weekend. This was our first weekend at home after 3 weekends out of town, and the last weekend before I leave town again for the Portland Marathon this FRIDAY! EEK

I only had an 8 mile run Saturday and it was just one of those runs when the weather is perfect, the birds are singing, and your body feels great! It’s all fun and games until a bird poops on you only 2.5 miles in. In my running career this was the first time this has happened to me so I guess I am lucky or really unlucky who knows. Anyway, I stopped and grabbed a handful of leaves and wiped it off. Then ran like it was impairing my whole body to the nearest gas station another 1.5 miles away where I washed it off with soap and turned my shirt around so it was at least in the back and I didn’t forget and wipe my face with my shirt! Anyway, it was only a tiny drop people but it was dramatic as you can tell!

garminAfter my run Steve and I had our usual fish tacos then headed to get groceries for the week. I had a massage planned for 2:30 but my masseuse text me she wasn’t feeling well. I was sad so I went and got a mani/pedi instead to ease the pain. The razorbacks played at 6pm so we decided a nice evening in plus grilling was the perfect way to spend the evening. I found this new to me gluten free cider from Michelob Ultra that was really good and only 120 calories compared to some that are 250 calories like angry orchard. I just can’t justify drinking that many calories…I would rather eat more wings!

game nightWe (as in Steve) made these delicious wings on the grill. We (as in he) basically just seasoned them with salt/pepper, dusted in corn starch, grilled them, then tossed them in Frank’s hot sauce. Okay I actually did help with the dusting in corn starch part but I made a mess so I got fired.

wingsThe Hogs lost, but it was a nail bitter that went into overtime. Whomp Whomp!

Okay now lets talk about the past just a little more, then we are basically all caught up! Last weekend I went to Little Rock (about a 3 hour drive away) to run the Race 13.1 series Half Marathon. I never win anything, but I actually won a free race entry from my girl over at Sweet Miles Blog.

I couldn’t turn down a free race, plus my training called for 12 miles anyway, so I thought for 1.1 extra miles it would be nice to have new scenery plus water stations. This was the inaugural race for this series in Little Rock, and the turnout was really small with only about 380 runners. It was an out and back course which is not my preference but the scenery was beautiful along the river and primarily on their paved trail system. I didn’t set any PR’s as I didn’t want to push anything with my Marathon only a few weekends away that point, but it was a fun run with some nice bling!

20 Miles & A Surprise at the end…

2 days of blogging in a row….don’t fall out of your chair. I am still playing catch up, but 2 weekends ago was my 20 mile training run, so I can’t not talk about it. This is the longest distance in my training before the Marathon next week. I changed up my route and did something totally different which turned out to be a huge success.

3 Things that worked for my LONG run.

  1. These new insoles. They do make my shoes tighter which I am still trying to figure out how to deal with but they made for a smooth 20 miles. I can’t decide yet if I am going to wear them for the Marathon but my legs/feet felt great for 20 miles. I am dealing with a stubborn ingrown toenail (TMI I’m sorry). My right foot is fine but until I get the ingrown taken care of on the left, it irritates that foot a little. My pediatrist said that it wasn’t that bad so she would wait to fix it until after my Marathon.
  2. We have a trail system here in Northwest Arkansas that spans about 30 miles and although parts of it in each city have been open for a few years now, this year they finally completed it and now it all connects together. Well last Saturday they were having a Square to Square bike ride from Bentonville to Fayetteville, so I knew there would be lots of entertainment and water stations along the way. I was able to run point to point in one direction on a beautiful trail, through 4 towns, and it made the whole experience so much better than my usual out and back routes.
  3. Lastly, I am so late to the game but I have finally been listening to the Serial Podcast. I had about 4 episodes left which got me through 17 of the 20 miles. It was so entertaining and the weather was perfect. Thinking back on this run gives me joy!

So with these 3 things combined I had an amazing 20 miles run, and I came out of it with lots of confidence which was not the case for last years 20 miler.  When I got to the end I dropped a pin with my location for Steve and walked up to the highway where he picked me up and surprised me with concert tickets to see O.A.R in Kansas City, Missouri, which is 3.5 hours away and is one of our favorite weekend getaway spots. He dropped me off at my car then went to pick up some chipotle for lunch while I got ready and packed an overnight bag.

The concert venue was such a good one. It was really small which I love, and is literally just an open courtyard type area behind this pizza shop called Grinders. They even had Gluten Free pizza and beer. I was super happy and hungry after that long run!

OARO.A.R reminds me of High-school. It was such a great show and we even discovered a few new bands that we loved that opened for them. Our hotel was about a miles walk away and the weather was perfectly just a tad chilly all night! FALL has me crazy happy right now!

OAR on stageThe next morning we found a cute little corner coffee shop called Mildred’s that had some super yummy flavored roast. I tried the snickerdoodle! YUM!  I couldn’t not take a picture in front of this wall. I told Steve this was a fashion bloggers dream wall….so I tried to pose like they do! hehe!

kc coffeeSteve took me out of the way to hit up Trader Joe’s so I could stock up on some essentials. Then as soon as it hit 11am and one of our very favorite BBQ places Arthur Bryant’s opened we were in line! It was so good I forgot to get a picture of the actual food, but it wasn’t healthy I will tell you that (fries were involved)

OH Hi! I took a long break and enjoyed life for about 3 weeks without stopping to tell you about it. I’m sorry! Just when I thought no one missed me, one of my favorite friends on the gram told me she missed my blog! Thanks Ashley, and even if you are the only one….well this is for you!

I didn’t do it on purpose I promise, but this is literally the first time I have been home for the weekend in the last 3 weeks.

tolleLots has happened in the meantime, so brace yourself for multiple post this week to get caught up. In between the last time we talked and now, I completed my 20 mile training run, ran a half marathon race in Little Rock, joined a brand new Fitness Club, and signed up for some exciting races for next year that I am anxious to tell you about. Lastly, I am officially in the taper zone and counting down the next 7 days 23 hours and 31 minutes until I run the Portland Marathon next weekend! This week is all about eating all the iron and sweet potatoes I can get my hands on.

Where do I even start. Let’s start with Nashville. Steve and I made the 8 hour road trip to Nashville for the long Labor Day weekend, and as usual had an amazing time. If you follow me on Instagram then this is going to be old news! I will say that for the first time ever I actually focused on the fun tracker more than the mile tracker than ever before when I have traveled. My foot had been hurting before we left so this break was exactly what it needed. I did sweat at least 2 of the 4 days but only 1 day was running and only 3 miles!

First stop in Nashville (literally) was this little Burger place we saw on the TV show Diners Drive-Ins and Dives called Gabby’s Burgers. Such a hole in the wall type place but they had Gluten Free buns! I can’t tell you the last time I have had a burger until this one and now I have had like 3 since…I met my quota for like 2 years.

gabbysNext stop after checking into our hotel was our favorite music spot and boy was it crowded!

tootsiesBirds eye view is always better. This is me getting into a vacation state of mind! It normally takes a good 24 hours to fully let loose.

cremaWe got to hit up our favorite rooftop sushi place. Neither of us wanted to pick out the rolls so we did the Sushi tour which was the chef’s recommendations. It was good, but next time I’ll pick my own thank you!

viragoIf you can’t tell already the weekend was all about music, eating, sleeping, and repeating. I loved this cute little place called Butchertown Hall that I found on Instagram.

butchertown hallAnd so did everyone else because it was busy, but these tacos were worth the wait…not to mention the bloody mary! Plus I got the last one because they told the girl at the table next to us (you can see her pink jeans to the left) that they were out of bloody mary mix. WHAT?!?!? Who does that on a Sunday? They do make their own so I guess someone didn’t plan properly!

tacosAnd just like that, it was time to come home and DETOX, and get ready for my 20 MILER! Stay tuned to hear all about that weekend and the surprise that Steve had for me at the end! (no it was not a wedding ring- let’s not start those rumors)!

Happy Saturday! I am off to run 8 miles…. the longest I will run until the Portland Marathon next weekend! Eeek!

When you think you can’t go any farther…YOU CAN!

There is really nothing like completely exhausting yourself with a long run that makes you feel the strongest you have ever felt! Running has changed my life in so many ways, and without getting too emotional about it, lets just say I am thankful for every mile even if I woke up less than excited about 19 ahead of me yesterday!

I thought about this yesterday on my 19 mile run when I really wanted to quit at mile 16…like really. I wanted to call Steve and have him come pick me up. Thankfully I knew he wouldn’t answer anyway because he was on a long bike ride. I didn’t want to walk home because that would take forever. SO I talked myself into just doing 18 then I would let myself walk the last mile. When I got to mile 18 I started all my head games….”comfort is not what you were looking for” “you are stronger than this” “race day is going to feel like this” and apparently it worked and I pushed through with a strong finish and even thought at mile 19 …” I could keep going if I had to” Thinking of my 2:00 Massage appointment didn’t hurt either!

garminThis run was a lot harder than my 18 a couple weeks ago, which starts to mess with your head and your confidence level, but I try to remind myself that every run is different and there are so many factors. I didn’t feel well this week, late nights at the office, work dinners, monthly visitor, tired from traveling the last 2 weeks, highest mileage so far in training, and the list could go on! So even though this run didn’t feel as strong as the last long run, I am going to focus on being really strong for the next long run of 20.

Home for a While…..

I had a great trip to New York this week, but I am glad to be home for a while. This was a quick one. I left Wednesday around noon and got to New York at 5:30. It was storming when I woke up on Wednesday so I was worried that I would have a LONG travel day especially since I wasn’t flying direct and had to stop over in Atlanta. Since it was pouring rain I headed to gym to get in a  good sweat before I would be sitting on a plane all day! My girl Kristin over at Peptalks and Ponytails got me this super rad shirt from The Hungry Runner Girl and it is so soft, ya’ll!

hungry tankOnce I made it to Atlanta on time and  saw that my flight out of there was going to be on time, I got online and purchased a ticket for 1 to see the broadway play Wicked at 7PM. Boy am I glad I did. I had to rush to the hotel when I got in and hop into a cab and rush over with no time to eat dinner, so dinner was a power bar and almond butter packet in the cab!

The show was 2.5 hours long and I enjoyed ever single second including my adult sippy cup of wine!

wickedThursday morning I headed to an offsite training facility that I have never been too so I got a super early start at the gym so I would have plenty of time to grab Starbucks and find my way! Good thing I did because I did get lost and have to jump in a cab to get there, but at least I was prepared for the next day! #directionallychallenged

in trainingAfter work Thursday evening I went straight to see William at O&M Salon to get my hair done. I have been seeing William in New York for a little over a year now, and I don’t know what I will ever do without him! So I did decide to go with the long bob, and spoiler alert…. I LOVE it! It isn’t too short but so much thicker and healthier looking and really easy to style. William never disappoints.

After getting my hair done I hopped in a  cab and headed to Primo135 in the West Village to meet an old friend that just happened to be in town on business too. I hadn’t seen him in nearly 4 years so we had lots of catching up to do over some amazing wine! By the end of the night it was raining so I hopped in a cab and headed back to my Marriott home to catch some z’s before the last day of class.

I was so tired traveling home on Friday afternoon after a nonstop few days in the city. I got lucky and got to sit in a premium seat on the first leg. The guy next to me decided he wanted to get real cozy. People amaze me sometimes!

on the planeI made it home at nearly 11PM, and even though I was so tired I had to take a shower to wash off the airport! I woke up a little later than usual on Saturday, but I was so happy to wake up to my own coffee!

coffeeAfter breakfast and coffee, I got busy on my 10 miler which went pretty well, but I felt so weak after. It took everything I had left.

Steve had a 50 mile bike race on Saturday so no fish tacos for me! #inserttears. So I ate a Gluten Free pizza at home and then took an extra long nap. I needed lots of rest before I could make it out with girls that evening for a concert! Hank Williams Jr. wouldn’t be my first musical choice but it sounded like a fun girls night and it was!

hank jrIt may not be my first choice but the crowd was huge, so apparently he has quite the following here in the South. I should have known!

concertI slept in until 8AM this morning which is a world record. I normally wake up at 5:30 or at the latest 6 on Sunday’s because my body is so accustomed to waking at that time! And honestly, I have no plans of productivity today other than laundry and meal prep for the week. I plan to take a steam shower and as many naps as possible. It has been raining all morning so I don’t feel guilty about this plan one bit! I need a fresh start this week!

Somewhat Silent Sunday

I am home for a few days before heading back to New York for work again this week. I had a great trip this week and I am actually looking forward to next week too. I am attending a training, and those always get me excited. #nerdalert Plus this trip I am getting my hair done so that is always fun. This past week I traveled with several coworkers (one of which is an amazing foodie) and we had some delicious food. My upcoming trip this week I am flying solo so I am sure my evening meals will not be nearly as exciting.

I always wonder what I was thinking when I book 6AM flights on a Monday, and then I remember it is because it is the only direct flight option. Being at the airport by 5AM means a 3:30AM wake up call that makes me do things like leave my car window down in the airport parking lot for the whole week. Don’t ask people, I have no idea. I hope it didn’t rain. Coffee and the latest edition of Runner’s World that I have been saving to read on this flight helped me wake up!

runners worldTravel day is always the longest day, because we go straight to the office when we get there at 10AM. It was restaurant week in New York and we ate a place called Butter. I had the Grouper, and by looking at this pic I don’t think I even have to tell you how amazing it was.

butter nycI was ready to hop on the treadmill Tuesday morning after not being able to get in a work out on Monday. My home sweet Marriott home treadmill was waiting for me.

treadmillFast forward through another long day at work and dinner Tuesday night was at Gato, one of Bobby Flay’s restaurants. We didn’t see him, unfortunately. I had the Mushroom and Kale Paella which was amazing but somehow did not get a picture of that, but I did get a picture of my salad which was also amazing!

GatoThe weather in New York was amazing and compared to home it was quite the breath of fresh air. We walked quite a ways after dinner to this cute little bar for Chocolate Martini’s! I don’t typically drink stuff like this, but it was the perfect after dinner treat!

choc martiniHalf of our group left the next day so the 3 of us that were left ate dinner the next night at a cute little Mexican restaurant called Gabriella’s, where we sat outside for hours in the amazing weather.

I left New York on Thursday afternoon and was home in time to enjoy a glass of wine in my favorite spot. There really is no place like home! However, the spiders tried to take over my spot while I was gone so I had to reclaim my territory. I told Steve he has to sit out here so they don’t get cozy again this week!

home sweet homeIt was a pleasant surprise to come home to much cooler temps and less humidity. After being on the treadmill all week,  I couldn’t wait to get outside and run on Friday morning. 5 miles never felt so good!

Yesterday was my long run, and I had 18 on the agenda. As you recall from last week my 17 didn’t go so well, so I was lacking confidence to say the least. I am happy to say that it was an amazing run, with amazing weather. It felt almost like a fall morning when I stepped outside at 67 degrees. I got started at 6:30am. I had to stop at the Farmer’s Market for a water refill and then again at the gas station for a gatorade which  I never drink while running, but I was craving it so badly. It was like rocket fuel and I was running faster in the last 2 miles than than I had ran all day. This was one of those runs, where I can truly say “ I left nothing out there”

garminAfter Steve got home from his bike ride we headed out for out usual Saturday Fish Tacos which I have stopped photographing since we eat them every single Saturday. After lunch we went grocery shopping and when we got home we both were tired so Steve took a nap inside while I napped outside.

resting my legsWhen I woke up I was raring to get out of the house so we took a drive about 30 minutes North across the state line to stock up on wine! It’s cheaper there, and so are the taxes so we do a stock up trip every so often! I love having a a fully stocked wine bar.

saturdayDinner was Mexican food and a Skinny Margarita.  I came home wanting to get in the hot tub and listen to music and look at the stars but steve was not feeling it, so I hot tubbed ( is that a verb) by myself with a glass of wine. If you haven’t done any star gazing lately, I highly recommend. It’s good for the soul!

I have no plans for Sunday, so the possibilities are endless! Happy Sunday Funday everyone!

This Plus That Equals 17

So about that 17 miles I was suppose to run yesterday…..yeah that didn’t happen. We are under a heat advisory here in Arkansas with actual temps nearing 100 and the “feels like” even higher. I knew as soon as I took the first few steps yesterday at 6:30AM that 17 was not probable. About 3 miles in I had already decided to adjust accordingly and do 5 out and 5 back for 10 miles instead. 17 was a goal I had set for myself not taking into account how the whether would be right now. When I got back I stopped off at the gym to run another 2 miles on the treadmill for a total of 12 miles for Saturday.

I am traveling to New York on Monday morning for work so there won’t be any time to get in a run so I ran the other 5 miles today on my usual rest day for a total weekend mileage of 17. Hey at least I got there….even if it took me 2 days and a treadmill!

garminI will be MIA this week, and unfortunately maybe even longer, because I come home for a few days only to go back to New York the following week! Wish me luck people! In the meantime…my bags are all packed and I am waiting for dinner to be ready so I can eat and go to bed with the street lights. 3:30AM wake up call!

Treat Yourself Tuesday

It has been a while since I linked up with Becky over at Olives n’ Wine for Treat Yourself Tuesday. However, that doesn’t mean treats haven’t been happening ya’ll!

Treat-Yourself-Tuesday-BadgeFirst up, let’s talk about a special treat that I bought for the house. I worked with Juli at the Urban Jungle to talk plants for my house. I wanted to fill some spaces with plants rather than furniture A. to purify the air in the house and B. to save money. This big girl was the biggest treat and I love her! Yes I am weird and I name my plants….they are living things people! I think I want to name this one Jewell after my grandmother, because she loved plants and this would make her oh so happy! So meet Jewell everyone!

plantAnd what would Treat Yourself Tuesday be without these  100% swoon worthy shoes that I just can’t get over! I found the cutest boutique on insta in one of my favorite cities, Nashville, called Hemline and so far it has not been so kind to my bank account, but very kind to my closet!

shoesI know I have talked about Thatch on hear before but my friend from high school Jade started a jewelry line with her sister out in Southern California called Thatch (named after a beloved family pet) and it just perfectly captures my style. I wish I could own every single piece. For now, I am on my 3rd necklace and this one makes my heart skip a beat. This is the Chrissy Lariat. It’s people like Jade that inspire me and I am so happy for her success with this line. Check them out. Here is a behind the scenes blog post about Thatch. Before they were creators of beautiful jewelry Jade and her sister started a boutique here in Arkansas called Lola (my dog Lola may or may not have been inspired by this name) it has become a Fayetteville staple over the last 10+ years. Jade sold the boutique, but moved out to California to open and run the new store in La Jolla California. Check Lola out for some serious style goals ya’ll!

necklaceI was unloading my clutch after Saturday evening, and when I saw these items laying out together I realized these are my essentials. I am loving, like really loving this new lip gloss I got with a gift card that was expiring at Neiman Marcus. It is the perfect nude gloss, called “almost nude”

essentialsLastly, to round out a perfectly good Treat Yourself Tuesday, it is time for new running shoes! Normally I like to go with the brightest colors I can find but I was feeling these all black ones for some reason. I have been diligently tracking miles everyday and it has really helped me to make sure I order shoes when I need to. I try to change shoes every 300 miles.

The Weekly Grind of Marathon Training

As I move closer to the Marathon, I really had to sit down and build out my schedule for the duration of my training. As you probably know, I have been working with a running coach. I have really learned a lot in terms of tempo and hill work, and although I really enjoyed the experience and challenge, I decided not to continue training with him. Mainly because of money. It came down to him or my house keeper so you see how that turned out. I don’t have the time needed to really work one on one with him so paying him to tell me how many miles to run seemed less important after I learned how to properly do tempo and hill work. Another big reason is that he enters my plan week to week. I am such a planner when it comes to running and I really wanted to know the exact date my 20 mile training run will be. I also need to be able to plan around work and personal travel.

So I built my own plan loosely based on a Hal Higdon plan and the learnings I have taken from my coach. I am running anywhere from 35-40 miles per week. 5 days of running, 1 day of cross training, 1 rest day, and fitting in yoga and foam rolling as much as humanly possible.  Here are a few scene’s from last week’s training.

Monday is normally my highest mileage for during the week with 7 or 8 miles that include 4 miles of tempo. I have to get up a little earlier on Monday, but man are the sunrises totally worth it. Sometimes you just have to stop and enjoy….and take  pic of course! If I am the earlybird, this is the definitely my worm!

running viewsTuesday is my shortest distance of the week at 4 miles. My coach had me start strength training on these days, so after running outside I am using what I have at home in my yoga loft to get some toning and strength work in.

pumpWednesday is my cross train day. I have been riding outside a lot on my road bike this day, but this past week I started my day with some early morning yoga. I did a 35 minute flow I found on You Tube. Wednesday night, I was so stoked to try a new spin studio called FreeRide that just opened a few months ago. The 5:45pm class has been full every time I go to sign up so a coworker told me the key is signing up a week in advance, and that was the trick. This class was SO fun! It is a dark black light room with mirrors, and everything is choreographed to the beat of the music. You are basically dancing on a bike and the 50 minutes flew by. We also used 2-3 pound weights for a few songs and oh the burn!

spinThursday is Hill Repeat day.  I do these on the treadmill at our gym. Last week’s workout was as follows:

15 minutes easy running warm up
Main Set
312 minute on 3% include with 2 minute walk recovery in between
10 minute easy running cool down

Friday, is just good ole easy running, which right now has been 5 miles. When I got home I did a 10 minute arm circuit I found on You Tube.

10 minute armsSaturday is my long run and I already told you all about 15 miles last week, now for 17 this week!

Sunday is RECOVERY and eat ALL the food day, because I am always starving the day after my long run!
